Free Team Resource: Exploring Material Properties

By: Kate Grimes

Are you looking for some fun Instant Challenges for your next team meeting? Our Exploring Material Properties Cards are designed to engage your team in learning material properties and improve their Instant Challenge skills. When selecting materials to solve an Instant Challenge, it is important for your team to understand key material properties. Use these cards to help your team explore the malleability, hardness, elasticity, plasticity and density of each material.

Malleability – Can the material be easily given a new shape?
Hardness – Is the material resistant to scratching or indentation?
Elasticity – Is the material able to return to its original shape?
Plasticity – Does the material not return to its original shape?
Density – What is ratio between mass and volume? For a material to float, its density must be equal to or less than the density of the liquid.

At a Destination Imagination tournament, your team will receive an Instant Challenge and the materials with which to solve it. The team members must think on their feet by applying appropriate skills to produce a solution in a period of just 5 to 8 minutes. Although each Instant Challenge has different requirements, all Instant Challenges reward teams for their teamwork. Make sure to encourage your team to work together as they solve the questions and activities for each material.
