The 2017-18 Team Challenges are Now Available!

By: Tina Shaffer

It’s time to officially kick off a brand new, creative season of Destination Imagination! The 2017-18 Team Challenges, as well as our Roadmap and Rules of the Road resources, are now available for download in the Resource Area. In order to view or download these materials, you must have a 2017-18 Team Number. (Please note: Program Materials can only be downloaded by the purchaser—Team Manager, school administrator, parent, etc.) If you don’t have a Team Number, you can purchase one at ShopDI.org.

Though all teams participating in our competitive Team Challenges will have the opportunity to review all Challenges in full, the process to do so has changed slightly. To preview the Team Challenges in full, you will need to access your team’s dedicated page in the Resource Area. For more information on how to complete this process, read our step-by-step Team Number Purchaser guide.

Your team’s Challenge selection can be changed at any time and/or multiple times. However, you must make sure that the final Team Challenge selected is the one your team plans to solve and present at a tournament or showcase. For more information on deadlines to select your final Team Challenge, please contact your Regional or Affiliate Director.

Important: All teams in the U.S., Canada and Mexico will receive printed copies of Roadmap and Rules of the Road, as well as the final Team Challenge they have requested to be shipped. Please note that the printed versions of our Program Materials will begin shipping on September 7, 2017.

Destination Imagination (DI) is built on the knowledge that with each new generation there is a need for critical thinkers with well-honed 21st century skills to solve the great and sometimes unknown challenges before us. Those skills must be practiced in multidisciplinary contexts that require a broad range of skills and provide the right mix of challenge and relevancy to enable students to make connections and grow. DI’s Team Challenge Experience has 21st century skill building at its core, using the creative process to fully integrate the engagement of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics into exploratory, open-ended, hands-on educational experiences. In solving one of our Challenges, students become better at collaboration, creative and critical thinking, and problem solving, and learn the skills needed to succeed in school, their careers and beyond. See our organization’s proven results.

Take a look at our video below to see why students, educators, parents and volunteers support Destination Imagination year after year.

Students form a team (2-7 members) and are managed by an adult leader (Team Manager), who is often a parent or teacher. The Team Manager helps the team stay on track throughout the season, but does not directly help the team with its solution to the DI Challenge. After the team chooses their preferred DI Challenge—Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Engineering, Improvisational or Service Learning—they will begin working on a solution to that Challenge. Students typically work on their solutions for 2-4 months. Teams then have the opportunity to showcase their Challenge solutions to trained Appraisers at a tournament, as well as speak with their Appraisers about their solutions and how they came up with their ideas. Teams that qualify at the state level are invited to participate in Global Finals—the world’s largest celebration of creativity. Get an inside look at this season’s competitive Team Challenges.

We also offer a noncompetitive Early Learning Challenge, called Rising Stars, for preschool through second-grade students. Our Early Learning Challenge is an is an opportunity for kids to be creative, learn simple building and construction, become comfortable working in teams, and learn how to speak in front of an audience.
