In Search of DI’s Pioneers

As we celebrate 25 years of Destination Imagination (DI), our organization is on a special mission to locate and honor the individuals who played a pivotal role in making DI possible in 1999.

While most nonprofits are born out of the vision of a single individual or very small group, DI was built through the collaboration, energy, and dedication of hundreds of motivated volunteers from all over the world. These volunteers imagined and created an organization that would champion creative expression, self-directed learning, spirited collaboration, and innovative thinking for kids.

Prior to the inception of DI, one of the first-ever meetings took place in Chicago, Illinois in 1999, with more than 80 people attending. (Check out the photo below!)

In 1999, volunteers also crafted DI’s first Team Challenges and created the DI Scholarship Committee (now known as DISC, but previously known as VOMBO). Though we have been able to find and connect with some of our founding volunteers, we have many more to go, and we need your help!

If you are one of DI’s founding volunteers, we would love for you to connect with us through this brief questionnaire. If you’re not a founding volunteer but know someone who is, please send them the link and ask them to connect with us!

Thank you in advance for helping us to recognize the visionaries who helped shape the legacy of Destination Imagination!
