STEAM Activity: Build a Flying Device

Ready to take your children’s imaginations to new heights? For this STEAM activity, kids will have the chance to create a new and innovative flying device of their own design!

But here’s the best part: THEY get to decide what the flying device will be used for! Will it be a delivery drone that drops off packages? Or a personal flying machine that zips you around town?

With a specific set of materials, their creativity and problem-solving skills will be put to the test as they construct their flying device.

And that’s not all – after they’ve constructed their flying device, they’ll also get the chance to showcase it in a performance/skit that they create.

We can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Challenge: Your challenge is to build a new and innovative flying device and then create a performance that includes your new device. What function(s) will your flying device serve? It’s up to you to decide!

Time: 10 minutes (8 minutes to build your device and plan and practice your performance; 2 minutes to present your performance). Note: You can increase the time for younger children.

Materials: 2 index cards, 1 sheet of paper, 4 craft sticks, 2 chenille sticks (pipe cleaners), 2 straws, 2 paper cups, 1 balloon, 1 12-inch piece of string, tape
